Over the years as Glasgow expanded, the incorporation of various villages and towns into the city resulted in the duplication of many street names. Although the renaming of the streets in question solved the then current day problems, it did raise others for those of us who inconsiderately delve into the past, e.g. Great-Granny Smith was born in a place called East Nelson Street, but I can't find it. For me, living near the city, it's simple enough to look up an old Post Office Directory, but for those of you from more distant parts, it's not so easy. To assist you in this I've copied from the 1937/38 Post Office Directory all those streets which have been renamed up to that time. The streets are in alphabetical order of original name with the new name shown opposite. I've left in the old postal codes as they sometimes appear in old maps and can narrow down the area of the map you might have to search. Just click on the letter with which your street name starts.
I feel should point out that there was a more comprehensive publication produced around the time I created my original pages. I don't know who the author is or if it is still available, I have, however, been told that it contained information up to a later date and also included details of Streets, Places, Terraces, etc. which were not in the PO Directory and which, due to the research required, could not really be considered in the public domain. The upshot of that is that even if I came across a copy, I could not include these additional details out of respect for the author's efforts and of course, copyright.
One thing I haven't been able to do is to obtain a listing of streets which have disappeared entirely, been realigned, or have been created and simply given the name of an older street. An example of this is Slatefield Street which originally ran north/south from Gallowgate to Duke Street, it disappeared entirely but a new street of that name has appeared which runs east/west, parallel to Gallowgate, not much help if you want a photo of where old Great Granny Smith was born. Here's hoping the list is of some help to you.
